I think that's one of the drawbacks of our political system. Politicians cannot be held accountable over a long period of time. They tend to prefer short-run "solutions," and not solutions which are better in the long run (maybe only in decades).

By the way, the Nazis also financed their propaganda, the war and everything with a snowball system. That's one of the reasons why he had to gamble and escalate the war more and more.
