This article about Arafat caught me a bit off-guard because it's by Alan Dershowitz, a well-known US leftist (and O. J. Simpson lawyer).

What I've noticed is that even in the explicable praise for Arafat coming from certain European leaders, there's this hope expressed that "peace now has a new chance to begin." Even they know that he was the obstacle to peace. But there's one problem with their hopeful sentiment: Arafat, for all his murderous corruption, was democratically elected by the Palestinians. Are the Palestinians collectively interested in peace at all?
