Subject: Rodents under the hood

This may sound like an odd question, and I should be able to locate the answer, but have not had luck yet. All the damage websites I've seen show damage to homes, crops, trees and buildings, but not vehicles.

Had a call from a local person that has been having rodents making nests under the hood of her vehicle. This has also happened to her co-workers that park and use the same outdoor parking lot. She says the nests are about canteloupe size in diameter and the rodents have been chewing the electrical wires and causing damage. They also have seed pods from a nearby tree in the nests. This has been ocurring off and on this past winter and at least 3 vehicles have been damaged.

She thinks they are squirrels--I think mice or rats??

Anyway, what do you suggest as a deterrent?

Typically, wouldn't a vehicle that is driven regularly not have this occur? They do not leave them overnight, so the critter is very industrious.

The neighborhood is residential with some commercial property. They are a local union and are adjacent to a few businesses...hair salon, Tae Kwon Do academy and Dr. office. They are on a busy 4-lane street and surrounded by homes.

Any help or referrals would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Naturalist Dawn in Iowa
