Subject: raccoon on roof top

How can we prevent raccoons from coming on to the roof?
Last night we waited and watched the raccoon that was making a den in our attic leave. It crawled out of the soffit and passed our window, not before stopping and climbing up on to the window sill to stare at us face to face. It was on its hind legs looking into the bedroom window. Our bedroom window allows us access to the garage roof. We watched it climb down the tree next to the garage roof. We quickly blocked off the access to the attic with bricks tightly packed and a box of moth balls.
This was only the second night we heard the raccoon, it was extremely loud and noisy, so we're sure there was no babies born yet. The raccoon we seen was very large around the middle and really waddled. 2 hours later we heard the raccoon come back. We heard scratching for a few minutes then nothing. We checked the soffit in the morning and none of the bricks were moved and the area was still sealed off. We can cut the tree down by the garage but what about the downspouts? The raccoon can still access the roof from the spouts and visit our bedroom window again, especially when the windows are opened during the warm weather and just the screens are in place.
Can we do something to prevent them from climbing the downspouts?
