Hearing the few whispered words at the back of the church, he lifted his head up and snuck a furtive glance backwards, not wanting to be too obvious in the gesture. He didn't know what it was that made him desire to be so quiet in these movements - maybe it was that unspoken rule that people were to be left alone when speaking to God, that their religious business was purely just that, theirs, or maybe he didn't want to be seen here. Not yet, anyway. It was a female form, he could see that much but the face was unfamiliar. Had she caught him peeking back? The way his body was half turned, angled towards the side seemed to be too much of a giveaway. He threw her a hesitant smile, half apologetic, half friendly. Questioning whether he wanted company, he decided to play it safe. After all, most people didn't enter churches to strike up conversations. Perhaps it was better to simply let them bask in their sanctity.
