We just remodeled our kitchen. The old cabinets were partical board with a "Walnut" finish so dark brown it was almost black (I hated it), the only saving graces were the kitchen was big, had a large bar (that all the kids sat at when they were young and now all the Grandkids have their birthdays at)that joins the familyroom and the kitchen together, and it has lots of natural light. When we remodeled we put in natural maple cabinets so they are the prettiest light sand color. We kept the bar but used a pitted tile that adds a wonderful texture to it and changed the counter tops to solid surface (granite would have been wonderful but the checkbook wouldn't allow it). Somehow I ended up painting it a cantalope color with a white wash sponged on top (not much of that shows, just a stripe at the top of the cupboards and just below the cupboards) I have alot of deep cobalt blue accents, too. We
also added alot of lighting so at night its just warm and cozy. I've used assorted peices with both the cantalope and the cobalt to bring the two together. It has an almost old world feeling.
