Subject: New Song dedicated to Dan

I don't think many will see this here, yet if someone by chance does check out this site, maybe this song I wrote may show a bit of what I think a lot of us felt. I'm just getting around to shopping the song to publishers, and haven't received a rejection yet, so I thought it might be worth sharing after all.
I live on the coast in Southern California, and didn't write this piece until the eve of last years Peoria meet an greet at Pierre Marquette. I hadn't written anything since Dan died. That night I had hit up youtube, and watched a couple of video's, and bam, 30 minutes later, something in the air, brought this song out. Hopefully soon, I'll have a professional recording of the song. I waited because I had listened to others songs, and I just had to walk away from it all for awhile, using Dan's lyrics at that point in time in a song didn't do anything for me (which is a totally personal feeling nothing more).
I read all the letters on the websites, and so many peoples reactions were that they cried. So the title of the song is "I Think I'll Cry" and its dedicated the Dan, but can actually be used for anyone suffering a loss of someone special in their life on any level. Hope you enjoy the words, and hopefully not too long from now, it will be able to be heard. Here are the lyrics, 1rst verse, Finding out...2nd Verse, The loss...3rd verse, the gratitude.
I think I'll Cry

I awoke...to no sun.
On that morning, the ocean won
It was misty and gray....
I read the story, news was on TV.
Nothing helps when it hurts like this,
Its so hard to see, its ended this way.

Well, I think I'll cry, I think I'll cry,
I think I'll........Oh I'll cry.

I felt the loss, so many have known,
The kind that takes your heart in a
Cold Cold grasp, then squeezes slow.
Some believe that angels cry, when one
So loved, loved so, accepts their wings,
and flies away.

Chorus:

The years pass, I wouldn't write,
Then it crept in like whispering winds,
In the deep dark night, guiding me to
What I'd write. For the words, in meaningful lines,
All your thoughts with heart, all you helped us to
Define....No stone seemed unturned.
Know we listened, and lessons we've learned.

Chorus:
Know we listened, and lessons we've learned,
Thanks again, for the lessons I've learned.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your song here. Your lyrics, especially the second verse, brought back memories of that heart-wrenching pain. Thankfully, the pain has been softened by time. But in a way, I was glad to revisit it for a moment, if just to feel that shared sense of loss and connection again. I haven't felt that for quite awhile now. I still feel the loss, but not the connection.

So thanks, and someday I'd like to hear the music that goes with your words. Let us know when it's ready to be heard.

Kelly

Thanks for taking the time to read the song. I felt just donating to PCF, wasn't ever going to be enough of a payback to his memory for me, I felt the need to do more. Writing this was too quick to be painful for me, which I'm really happy about.
It's hard to get people who do this whole songwriting thing to understand how much I want the song to be accepted as what it actually is, a Thank You to someone who's gifts of music is so overwhelmingly powerful and meaningful to my love of music. I've only requested one thing should anyone want to record the song, that "In memory of Singer/Songwriter Dan Fogelberg" be beneath the physical title of the song.
Thanks for reading my song, and one day soon hopefully I'll be able to share with you a finished worthy version of the song itself. I wrote the music and the lyrics, now the talent (vocals) has to come in and put the spit-shine on it. Have a great Day, thanks again.

Read your song with both happiness and sadness in my heart.
Happy that you finally found the words to express your grief and sadness that you had to find those words at all. I still listen to Dan's music everyday, I never tire from hearing any of his music--its so timeless with great melodies, a testament to his talent and diversity. I applaud you for your deep gratitude and like all us Danfans, share in your grief. Best Wishes in the success of the song. The lyrics are a beautiful tribute. I cant wait to hear the song! Lin

Thanks for the kindness of your reply and for reading the lyrics. I do have a recorded version I send out to potential publishers...I have no voice, my left hand has been broken in 6 places on my middle, ring, and pinky between the knuckles and wrist, so its not as pretty as the song can be. Actually I hear a woman singing the song instead of a guy. My wife thinks so as well. I do two versions of the song, one with what I felt needed to sound hollow and wrong (as I feel all attempts at Fogelberg songs are for me personally), yet I added it on a 6 string instead of a 12, and it isn't exactly entered in my best walk up to it in the recording, but I do things once and am pretty much finished messing with it lol. I would share the version only with a heartfelt promise that its has to be pretty much something those that get it keep to themselves. I'm not about the making something off the song,(sadly publishers on the other hand are) its about them being willing to publish something that's out there on the internet I don't want to squander the interest generated around the song. I have companies interested in it, some want to move real quick on it, I'm not about the quick, for me its more about it being something I can hang my hat on and say, yeah, I wrote that about my favorite artist of all time, and people felt it was sincere.

As a hardcore DanFan, I am always interested in what others have to say about my favorite singer/musician/songwriter. I would love to hear your song honoring Dan whenever it is available. Will you be posting on youtube? Sadly I will be unable to make the trip to Peoria next week. Will look forward to hearing your song in the future.

Thanks for the response, and here's where I am with getting it all set up. I played the song and sent it in, and everyone wants to pitch it to the project currently happening. I DO NOT want that happening, so I've been holding off until the tribute CD is finished and out for consumers. My writing the song was a total spur of the moment deal. I didn't do it for profit, or for any other reason than to finally explain what I heard, felt, and read after Dan passed. So, right after the CD is released, I'll give the go ahead to start pitching the song (which I hope has strength enough to stand on its own for anyone suffering loss, a reason to say, woah, been there. After all, I didn't sit down and just write the song after I heard the news...heck it took me 8 months before I even picked up my guitar after Dan died.
Like you, Dan is a favorite of mine and has been since I was in high school in the early to mid 70's. I wish I could say I put a ton of time in it, but that's just not the case...it was quite quick and painless to write, but very straight up about that day and what we as fans relayed to his loved ones on the web site memorials. Thanks again for your response, and I will set up a way to hear it once its been recorded.
