Hall's Road, Crosskeys
What a super find this site is. Brings back so many memories. My brother and I were evacuated to Risca in 1940. In 1942 my mother and my 2 other younger brothers joined us and we ended up living in 2 Hall's Road, which at that time was 4 cottages situated below the canal and behind the railway station, at the south end of Carlton Terrace.
What a pleasant surprise when I turned up the photograph of MR Hurn outside his newsagent's shop. I served him as a 'paper-boy' for 5 years, delivering morning papers to the whole of the south of Crosskeys, from the railway brige to the Western Welsh bus depot, to Gladstone Street. What days.... what memories. Thank you.

Re: Hall's Road, Crosskeys -- MICHAEL SMITH, 21:42:09 10/08/07 Fri [1]
Hi
I came to live with my aunt at 21 Halls Road for a few years around 1948/49. I went to Crosskeys school and had a great time. One of my uncles used to run the films in Park Hall cinema. I had a lot of relations in the area and still have some in Halls Road. Fantastic time.
Does anyone have any pictures of the old cottages at the back, i think it was called Canal Parade.
Cheers
Mike

Re: Hall's Road, Crosskeys -- Peter Farley, 18:15:52 27/09/08 Sat [1]
Thanks everyone for your messages on Hall's Road, but is'nt it strange, I lived in No. 2 Hall's Road until 1950, when I was 15 years old. I still have documents that refer to this address but I now believe the correct address should have been Hall's Road COTTAGES.
There was only 4 cottages in total, located between Crosskeys railway station and the canal. Access was via a steep lane approximately 100 yards down from Crosskeys Corner, over the station railway bridge and over a second railway line.
I have been back there a few times in recent years but the cottages have long been demolished.
THE Hall's Road is still there to the north of the village above High Steet before getting to Pontwaun.

Is this the same group of houses labelled as Rees Row on the 1879 map ?
See http://www.crosskeys.me.uk/location/xkeys1879.htm

Thank you for that information. I didnt realise that map existed. If Rees Row refers to the small block between the RH railway line and the canal, south of the station, then the cottages I refer to could well have been called Rees Row. They were certainly very primative, having no form of internal services, ie water, lighting or sanitation.

Re: Hall's Road, Crosskeys -- GLYN GREGORY, 00:20:49 20/02/09 Fri [1]
I lived in 8 Halls road terrace from 1950 to 1960. I remember derilect houses at the bottom of our street, past the allotments. We used to get water from 'the spout' when the mains water was disrupted.

Glyn, I lived in one of those derelict cottages you mentioned, until 1950. There was only four in total and I believe they were completely vacated by about 1952. The 'spout' you used was, at that time, our main supply of water, about 100 yards from the cottage. Oh happy days.
