Subject: Alot of andovers are much older then the minimum age required for the age group.
In reply to: Dancin mom 's message, "I beg to differ - not every adult is offered the chance to dance with the younger dancers" on Friday, July 08, 11:43:15pm

Some are 22, some 32, yeah, a few might be 16, but most of them fit into the andover part of the description. If you're willing to compete against the 20 somethings (you already do in adults) then why is it such a bad thing to have one or two young people in it? The only reason they dont split andovers into under 21 and 21 and over (thus eliminating any teenagers from the oldest age group) is because there just arent enough people. If the adults were in there there would be enough to make it a higher split. Then the "adults" wouldnt have to compete against the 18 year olds who've been taking other forms of dance since they were two (those people can be categorised as adults currently). And the Andovers who are 22, 25, or older would actually be able to compete against people closer to thier age.

As for it being allowed, technically it is. Some teachers may have thier own policies, but there is no rule against people who started dancing after they turned 18 dancing in the andovers.

Yes, the competition might be tough for some of the older adults, but thats part of the point. Maybe you cant fly across the stage like a 16 year old, but thats not the only thing you're being judged on. I have seen older dancers in andovers take wins over younger dancers even though the younger dancers could move alot more. I also think alot of older adults are allowed from the start to believe that they have these limitations, and can never get past them when in many cases its simply not true. It may take some more cross training, and they may need to pay more attention to thier health and fitness then the kids do, but that doesnt mean they cant.
