I could be called an expert on young girls smoking and the influences that get them started.
I married a guy with 4 daughters and inherited smoking girls who were 14 and 12. They lived with their grandparents until I married this guy and they were allowed to smoke.
Since I did not smoke and did not like the girls smoking, they created a new battleground by giving cigarettes to their 9-year-old sister. This girl smoked some then and even smoked some last weekend but at 25 is not a regular smoker.
The girl who was 14 gave quitting a try a couple of years ago and failed. Upon her failure came the 11th birthday of her twin girls. While readjusting to smoking, this girl bought the twins packs of cigarettes for their birthday. Clearly they did not smoke and expressed no interest but she wanted to share her failure. Now these girls are 12.
I have a 13-year-old granddaughter who did not take up smoking. Before her 11th birthday, her little sister was smoking with the twins. She gets to keep her own packs although her mother has never been hooked and survives as a party smoker. My son, the father, does smoke.
Party smoking got me after about 12 years. At first, I did not smoke at all. My husband and I had a girl together (he had 4 girls and I had 3 sons). About a year after that, I accepted a cigarette. Smoking a little at family gatherings helped me bond with the girls.
Then came last summer. We went to Las Vegas in early June for a second honeymoon. My smoking increased for the trip and got up to a pack a day. I was a smoker when the step-daughter started back and introduced her daughters.
Our daughter was nearing her 15th birthday. She wanted to smoke after her Quinceañera and look good at it. I helped her learn. She has not stopped either.
My husband's 4th daughter was 5 when we married. She's 21 now and took up smoking in college. She is a 2 pack a day smoker. My second son and wife do not smoke. My third son does smoke but my girls got his lovely wife to smoke when she was 20. She quit for her baby which recently arrived but has started back, mainly because of stress concerning her parents.
I don't think all mothers encourage their daughters to smoke. There could be as many as 25 percent who help though even if it is less than 25 percent. With men enjoying wives smoking, it must be over 50 percent. That does not mean the guy would ask a woman to smoke but would welcome her smoking if it happens.
There is probably some substance to the thought that a man may not ask for smoking but finds it difficult for her to quit once she has started. There have been men who insist on the smoking.
