A lot of the time yesterday at the office was spent congratulating Myra on her plans to marry Cart, the former football star here who made it big in the financial world and has come back to live in the same town where his youngest children, twin boys of 12, live.
His oldest a daughter of 22 is here apparently recovering from a drug problem.
Cart and Peggy's husband were teammates in the early football glory days of the school my 2 oldest sons now attend.
Trading one of my Capri 120 for a Parliament of Peggy's she said Cart and her husband were actually different boys growing up. They really only did things together in sports.
She said Cart was spoiled as a child and was allowed to drive at 14. She said she was 15 and went out with him. She called that her first opportunity to smoke.
"He liked his women wild," Peggy recalled. "It was hard to turn him down. Everybody thought his first wife was lucky to get him. It was totally opposite the case.
"Then he leaves her and got with a girl his age who was a college graduate. She became a stockbroker and they had the girl who is 17 now and does not live here. She taught him the stockmarket and he turned his parents' small nestegg into a profit that bettered them and really set him up.
"Then he leaves her for this third woman. We were invited to their wedding. Like his first 2 wives, this girl was to become a wild child."
Wild apparently meant smoking. Peggy took up smoking at 19 with her husband's mother while following his team in the playoffs. Her husband is a year younger.
"All the girls were after Cart, his cars and his wild life," Peggy said. "The competition for my husband was much less intense and with a nicer bunch of girls."
Cart's third wife, the mother of his twin boys, does smoke. I understand he owns the house they live in and rents it to them for pennies on the dollar. He's going to let the oldest daughter have the current house and let Myra help select a house.
I'll watch life in the fast lane in a slower moving car driven by an older Cart.
