This is probably to late to help you out, but this is what I know.
I breed Mickey Mouse Platties and I have learned the signs of birth.
A female can have 4-7 sets of babies with being with a male one time. That is like a human having four babies in for years after being with a male once.
A female has cycles of 30-35 days. They give birth to 30 to 40 babies at a time.
The mother will eat the babies along with the other fish in the tank if not seperated. Breeders are the best bet if you want all of the babies to survive.

Signs of pregnancy are easy, if you have a lighter color fish, you can tell if the fish will give birth when you see small black dots in the stomach. (they are the fry's eyes.) When I see that, I know that they are going to give birth within the week. For darker fish, you have to just kep rack of the time for each fish, if this is not possible, get plants that offer a lot of ground cover and makes it hard for the adults to get in. The fry will be able to hide in it. The fry are rather good hiders and half of them should make it to adult hood by themselves.
