I have a red tuxedo platy that mated several times with my sunset wag platy. Here's what I've learned:
When your platy is about to deliver, her belly gets darker than normal. On mine, I keep an eye out for that & put her in a nursery floating tank. You can get these at the pet store with a divider that goes in to allow the babies to fall through away from her. When it looks like she's done (within 24 hours it seems), I remove her from the nursery & take out the divider. I currently have 2 nurserys full! My larger babies are the 4 & 5 month old groups. My smaller babies are 3 months & under. I don't have room for more nurserys in my 20 gallon tank, so, for her last 2-3 pregnancies, she has had them in the tank & I have caught who I could & added them to the smaller nursery. The 4-5 month olds vary in size around an inch or so.
My problem is I have Orandas who would eat them due to their size, but about a week ago, 2 of my larger babies escaped & I have let them stay in the regular tank. So far, they seem to be doing well. After I clean the aquarium in the next couple days, I plan on releasing the larger babies to see how they do, since the two have done well the last week. Depending on what other fish you have, you should be able to release yours much earlier. Also, I don't know what you are housing them in currently, but filtration is a must! I found out the hard way. With her delivering on a nearly monthly basis, I was running out of room & had a small tank my brother used to keep a betta in. I put the first two batches of babies in there to free up the nurserys. Because of no filtration, they died in a week. So, keep that in mind & consider a nursery tank. Also, you can buy baby fish food, but my pet store recommended I use my regular food & just crush it up between my fingers starting out so the babies could eat it. As they grow, you don't have to crush it as much, but starting out, try to get it to a powder-like size. (Think flour)Hope this helps! :) Christy
