The minimum rule of thumb with ornamental goldfish is 10 gallons of water per fish. Orandas will grow to a length of 8 to 10 inches in a very short time given optimal water conditions.

I'm currently running a 55 gallon tank with a calico Ryunkin and a calico Oranda. The Ryunkin has reached 6 1/2 inches, and I just purchased the Oranda at 5 inches.

You do not need a heater most of the time. Ornamental goldfish prefer a water temperature of 68 degrees and spawn at 72 degrees. There is some debate over keeping the water a stable 68 degrees in colder climates during the winter. Some people believe that letting the tank cool during the winter promotes a longer life in these fish. Personally, I would never let the tank get below 60 degrees.
