Did these guys actually form religions though, or were the religions formed by those who came after?

Sure, they all taught ways to live, but did they actually say, "You must do it MY way and only MY way?"

I think that was added by those who picked up the threads later, and wanted a way to control people. In the bible, for example, there are so many inconsistencies,I believe that it has had major tampering,and that not much of the original message of love, compassion and caring still exists.
The ten commandments say thou shalt not kill, but then passages in the Bible condone killing as long as it is people of another religion or race. Or if you're people that pissed God off for whatever reason.

Exactly my point. It is not the teachings that are the problem - its the Religion that is the problem. The fanatical devotion to texts, the inability to understand those outside of bounds of the particular religion they are entrenched in. Religion is exclusive, by its very nature. It sets up an 'us' and 'them' mentality.
