I meant no disrespect, Nathan. I know of a lot of people like you who have honestly taken an interest in trying to find an answer to these questions, unlike a lot of Christians who have not done so. It's obviously a matter of faith. I can respect both points of view.

Not so much misunderstood, but perverted and distorted. The constrictions of religion prevent movement towards enlightenment because they discourage self discovery.
And yes, it is a powerful tool- to control people.

~ There are teachings found in the Bible and the Koran and the Torah that ARE a big part of the problem. Teachings that have been used to justify horrendous acts of inhumanity.

How many of the teachings recorded in these books are genuine? How many were added in by ghost authors to appease the rulers/head of church of the day?
IMO, its how messages of love can sit side by side with hateful directives, in these books.
