23 - because no other group of people could come up with leprachaun folk lore. King Brian and the like. The Germans have their dumb garden knomes - the Chinese have their dragons, but the Leprachaun - eye that's the best creature of all. Just try to outwit one. :)

I have a book on irish folklore at home and one of my favorite stories is in there.

There's this aging Irish couple. They go to the store and get their tin of soap. In the tin - the inside lid is polished like a mirror. Being poor older Irish folk, they'd never seen a mirror before. Once all the soap has been used, the Irish gentleman looks into the mirror and says "Pop! Ya can see me through this mirror, though you have been dead for years!" And thinking the tin mirror was his connection between himself and his long passed father, he grew quite fond of the tin and kept it in his pocket all day long. He took his Dad into the fields with him. He took his Dad to the pub. All the while, his wife watched him take this out and talk to it. When she'd ask to see it, he'd shield it in his pocket and deny her. She was a conniving woman and could not be trusted after all. "It is my father." he'd say and quickly leave the house.

SO, one night as he lay sleeping one night, his wife snuck out of bed. She reached for the tin, open it and exclaimed "I God, if this is the type of woman you like lookin' at, you've no need for me!" She saw an older woman in the mirror - care worn with wrinkles and ruddiness. This woke her husband up and he said "But Katie, tis my Pop." "No - you are lying to me. I see it with my own two eyes - tis a witch!" "Tis my pop." "I see a witch." After about an hour of going back and forth, they decided it was evil. So they burnt it in the fire.

My son just left for his St.Paddy's Day party and all the green plastic tophats at the $store were sold out, so I bought him a green bandana. He's going Irish pirate style! hehehe
