Well, you're wrong (although I do like Coldplay). I can name 4 better bands right now. Let's DO THIS!

I will use superhero analagies to illustrate my point.

Coldplay = Spiderman. Light, fun, powerful & potent, yet lacking the punch of many other great bands out there today. Fun, but not too deep.

Queens of the Stone Age = The Hulk. Also not too deep, but man, can they kick ass. Chew you up and spit you out. He could rip Spiderman in two.

Nine Inch Nails = Wolverine. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Just when you think they're down, they get back up and tear you a new one.

TOOL = Batman. Dark & painful past obscuring (and creating) amazing amounts of depth. Nothing especially "super" about them, other than that they spend massive amounts of time and energy trying to attain their artistic goals.

Radiohead = V (from V for Vendetta). They have taken what is expected and tweaked it, turning ones expectations on their head with the ultimate goal of changing the world. Like V, they were initially created by the system (your average Britpop band), but have taken control of their own destiny and are working toward that system's downfall.

U2 = Superman. Like Superman, they vow to work toward peace. Also like Superman, they've been around the longest and often play the role of mentoring and inspiring the up-and-comers. But when they come out of their corner, there's not really anyone that can compete with their amazing array of talents & achievements.

I'll compare the bands that I agree with to other bands

Coldplay, The Beatles light and airy and always beautiful to listen to.

QOTSA, The Rolling Stones with that revolving lineup they will never die. It's Rock'n'Roll and I like it.

NIN, The new David Bowie or maybe Pink Floyd. It's so new age and beyond anything else, not another band sounds like them. Like Floyd it's slick.

A band you didn't mention

The White Stripes, The Kinks fun songs with cool lyrics.

U2 uggh.

and "It's only Rock'n'Roll but, I like it!"

I also almost wrote Oink Floyd.

There would be no Coldplay without U2. There would be no Jeff Buckley without U2. Most "alternative" bands would not sound the way they sound if U2 had never existed.

You're right, though, I should have mentioned The White Stripes.

I'm not totally sure what their superhero counterpart would be, though.

Hmmm.

Someone gritty and real and classic. I already used Wolverine, so I don't know where to go with it.

OK.

The White Stripes = Thor. Seemingly innocuous duo who uses a tool of the gods (Thor's hammer = guitar) to invoke one of the gods (the Blues/Thor) to become something much greater than themselves. Classic, gritty and real.

I'm in a superhero place right now. Just read Neil Gaiman's 1602 last week, and new episodes of JLU are currently running. They're all up in my headspace.

I'm not sure if their would be a Coldplay without U2, but I also don't think they're a hybrid of U2 either. I am not sure what Coldplays inspiration is. They have an original sound to me.

You totally lost me with Jeff Buckley and U2. I can't hear the relationship. I think there would not be a Buckley if there wasn't indie or progressive punk, but U2 was neither of those. Even Led Zeppelin has more to do with Buckley than U2. I think Jeff was more like his father Tim, in the music genre sense.

Coldplay sound like Jeff Buckley, U2 and Radiohead mixed together, to me. But like I said, I really do like them. Even saw them in concert on their Rush of Blood to the Head tour. They are their own thing, but I think they've been influenced by those artists. Nothing wrong with that.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think there are some similarities between U2 and Buckley. I think it's something in the lightness of the melodies, as in With or Without You.

Well, I was trying to think of how they sound like U2 and I can say they do a little.

The problem is ofcourse i do like Coldplays sound and I don't like U2's. i did like them, I just don't now. They haven't kept me interested.

I'm not a big Radiohead fan either and that's why I didn't mention them, but I can also hear Buckley more with them.
I think Radiohead comes from a progressive punk background too, like Bauhaus.

oh and I have always had a hard time defining jeff Buckley. I think of him as a renaissance man. If that makes any sense, he has his own sound and it comes from everywhere, sometimes I even hear the blues or jazz in his stuff.

Definitely. I didn't mean to imply some sort of direct link between JB and U2, I just meant that I don't think he would have sounded exactly the way he did had U2 never existed.

And I agree, the latest U2 album was less than stellar. I bought it and listened to it maybe three times. It's sat on my shelf ever since (much like AS). But to me, that doesn't discount their earlier work in the slightest. Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree and War and The Unforgettable Fire. All amazing works of art, any way you slice them.

And not a Radiohead fan? You crazy lady. I personally think they come more from the Beatles school - started out with simple, quality pop/rock songwriting, but became more interested in experimental sounds and socially conscious lyrics later in their career. Just my take.

I really do like Coldplay but I don't think they're the best band out there. Honestly, I don't know who I would put up there myself but it wouldn't be Coldplay. I think they're an absolutely awesome band and I can't wait for their new one already (I didn't really dig their latest one as I had hoped I would). I really dig your comparisons to the superheroes by the way.

I'm also not a big U2 fan but I respect them. They do have good songs but Bono's voice just doesn't do it for me. I actually think that Coldplay admires U2 and Radiohead and they draw inspiration from both of them. However, they've come up with their own sound and it's awesome.

I totally agree with your comparison with Radiohead to The Beatles. That's another band I can't wait to hear from again.

I do agree that Radiohead get alot of inspiration from the Beatles, sooo many bands do.

It's funny how we hear different influences in bands and they can be different in opinions.

I can't listen to them right now. They're a good band, but they've been played to death for the last 5 years. I can't take it anymore. Chris Martin has become quite the douche over the years too...saying that he didn't care about EMI...that's pretty fucking dumb considering that a few short years ago no one even knew his name. His first record went nowhere (the one before Parachutes...the one before the one with "Yellow" on it). It's easy to forget where you came from when you have more money than God it seems.

Maybe he doesn't care for EMI because they weren't doing him any good. It's not a shock that a band or artist ends up hating their record company.

I also think Chris Martin is the best singer around right now, his voice could put me to sleep and it's not because I'm bored but it's soothing.

Twan - I think your Tool/Batman analogy is perfect. Both brooding, dark and definitely more than meets the eye on all levels.

Although I understand the premise for the Radiohead/V one, it doesn't feel exactly right to me. I'm thinking it's because although I love radiohead's music, there is no physical attraction. And being the female that I am, no superhero is truly super without that. Yeah, V's face is behind a mask, which leaves it up to my imagination, but hell, I even find that mask appealing. I can't think of any band I could use as a comparison to V. Speaking of, only one month to go!!!! V is now resting on my nightstand rather comfortably.

I finished Anansi Boys the other night, took me less than a week. I devoured that book. Fat Charlie was at times reminiscent of Richard Mayhew from Neverwhere. I liked the comical aspect and how Spider/Charlie sort of swapped identities and both melded together by the end of the book.

I thought the same thing (Fat Charlie/Richard Mayhew). But yeah, it was a great read. I hope he revists the characters again at some point. I grew to really like them.

So let me get this straight, you want to get it on with a dude in a mask? Man, what a sicko. Somebody call the state and get them to take away her kids!

(sarcasm smiley winky thingy)

I'm totally stoked for the movie, too. I keep hearing good things.

That is all.

Yeah, I don't like Coldplay either.

You know I wonder if they will sell V masks after the movie comes out. I can see it now, V Halloweeen costumes, ugh. However, if the situation ever becomes real desperate, a V mask might be able to remedy it....

I've also decided on my rock star counterpart for V:
Henry Rollins (and he sure as hell never needs a mask)
