Might be interesting to recall some TV series from yesteryear which entertained us over the decades.

Take Twilight Zone and moreso scifi oriented Outer Limits. Great stuff. Then, Star Trek comes about in the mid 60s, maybe not well received then, but wow! What a future! Space 1999 on TV '75-77 had some moments. (Of course, Star Wars '77 on the silver screen gave all scifi a great boost.)

Universal had a couple of entertaining TV series, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century '79-80 and the series Battlestar Gallactica '78-79. Others of interest: Logan's Run, Lost in Space, and I recall one from the 80s, with much potential but, sadly, cancelled after only 8 aired episodes called Otherworld, a parallel universe adventure. Not to be omitted, Carl Sagan's PBS Cosmos, a brilliant series about those billions and billions of stars in the universe.

We enjoyed mini series like the Martian Chronicles, and likely, I've overlooked some...perhaps you can fill in gaps or have comments. We enjoyed some of these before cable came to town, and VCRs/titles were not around or too costly.

Things are different now. We can enjoy many of those shows again in various ways. Just think though, so many are based on oldies like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers from yesteryear. Well, we can go far back to eg Jules Verne perhaps...but looks like science fiction (which often becomes reality) is here to stay.

Great summary of the best of science fiction television, Officer Torch. You cited most of my favorites, especially Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and Star Trek. I was a kid when Lost in Space hit the airwaves, so I have a certain nostalgic fondness for it, despite the fact that it is clearly no match for Star Trek in terms of quality and sophistication.

Otherworld is one I have not heard of, but I am glad that you mentioned Cosmos. I recall enjoying this excellent blending of science and entertainment back in 1980 on PBS. Carl Sagan's appealing voice and his contagious enthusiasm for the subject helped turn this 13-week factual series into an unlikely popular hit, and catapulted Sagan to national fame. I remember Tonight Show host Johnny Carson mimicking Sagan by exaggerating his frequent use of the phrase "billions and billions."

During the 1990s I was a big fan of the phenomenal cult hit The X-Files, although I seldom watch it in reruns today. One of the inspirations behind its creation was Kolchak: The Night Stalker, the short-lived but influential 1974 series starring Darren McGavin. The Night Stalker's primary focus was horror, although one or two episodes did delve into the realm of science fiction.
