Hey curious George, it’s the man with the yellow hat and let me dispel some myths for you here.. First, the Dracut Shopping News is nothing but a mouthpiece for the politically wired in Dracut. Mr. Shaw (a.k.a. Mr. Media) writes a weekly column for it, Ms. Garry also contributes weekly with a puff piece about all the good she’s doing for us on Beacon Hill, and of lesser concern is Mr. Myers who writes an investment piece. The latter seems innocuous enough as it doesn’t expound any political ideas. So, if you’re looking for some “hard hitting” reporting the DSN ain’t the ticket.

Secondly, Video poker in Dracut is kind of like the stop sign on Dinley Street. By law you’re supposed to stop but nobody does and that includes the cops. Why? Because it makes no sense to. You have a clear view of whose coming down Sladen and whose coming up Dinley the other way. At this point if someone did actually stop, that would probably cause an accident.

What does playing a poker machine and picking up a loaf of bread and a pack of smokes have in common? NOTHING! It is as unrelated as cross country skiing and picking up your dry cleaning. Picture Shop N Save putting in a few Foosball games in the Produce Section and you get a picture of how ridiculous it really is. Poker machines in bars? Now these two activities go together.

So when the licensing body grants a permit for two poker machines in a variety store it probably looks like a Tourettes convention with all that winking and nodding going on! But Junior over at Nason’s paid off right under the Town Manager’s nose and so he had to be put back in line for not being more circumspect. You can bet (no pun intended) that the other licensees in town are on notice to not commit such flagrant fouls.

But upset?? No, I can’t get my boxers in a knot over it. Why should the State and the Catholic Church be the only entities to make a buck from gambling. It’s the height of hypocrisy to me that the Lottery yanked their machines. Apparently they like their gaming monopoly. Lottery betting is sanitized and virginal because its legal and it doesn’t want to be tarnished by lowly poker machines. I wonder which has the better odds, the poker machine or the scratch ticket?
