V.B. made a comment earlier about the Commonwealth being complicit in aiding and abetting those who are "addicted" to gambling. V.B., if I'm paraphrasing incorrectly please correct me, as I don't want to misrepresent your post.

While I am not going to condone gambling, I have to say that I grow tired of the theme of people-as-victims. Remember when Nancy Reagan urged us to "Just Say No"? That is a good motto. The state doesn't put a bottle to anyone's inebriated lips, nor does it entice recalcitrant members of Debter's Anonymous to run down to Nason's in the cover of darkness.

Nason's also sells cigarettes, and Nicotene is the most addictive drug there is. But we don't raid their supplies of Marlboro with moral indignation.

While Nason's should be held responsible for their actions, I think the people who took advantage of the gambling are no less responsible for their actions.

The state of Mass. doesn't make anyone play the machines with a gun to their head. Nor do I believe that those who play the machines are disadvantaged because they have an impulse control issue. I just do not understand the parallel between allowing gambling and taking advantage of persons with palpable physical and mental infirmity.

I'm sorry, but the people are not witless victims. Again, Just Say No.
