I feel that if vampires come into the public view, humans will be in outrage and will collectively call for a manhunt of anyone that even slightly resembles nocturnal (Salem Witch Trials?); while the elders start trying to work out a deal with leading politicians of the time (mostly behind the curtain, these same politicians will most likely be "leading" the demands for justice).

Over the period of the next 5 years or so I'd expect multiple massacres of both parties, several battles, dwindling the vampire population down to more manageable levels. During this time I'd also expect speakers appealing to both sides, hopefully causing a majority against [needless] violence.

After 15 years, the people are mostly acclimated to living alongside vampires, having made agreements to mostly limit vampire feeding to convicted felons, or alternate sources; though some violence still remains - rebelling teens attacking vampire settlements during the day, vampires seeking revenge or just attacking for sport.
