I don't think that Irony's solution can solve anything. Yes, some scenes can be very short but other should be much longer than they are in the book. There are books that can be squeezed into short movies and books that can't.
I believe GFD belongs to the latter category.
And there are two oter objections. First is legal one. What about sex? Even if we skip "dirty" episodes what about kisses, hugs, etc.? The very air of GFD is underage-boy-gay love and lust. By removing it we destroy the soul of the book. But how can you save it in the current environment of legal Puritanism and ephebophobia? Especially in America. Then, actors. GFD's characters ( as I see them) are so ideal, perfect, even angelic ( everyone in his own style of course).. how can real kids match them?
So...
I'd like to see GFD movie as an animation. Of some Japanese style. This would solve a lot of problems.
Plus, it would be quite a low-cost project. Really, if it was some open project not grabbed by a Hollywood corporation a lot of people could take part in it. Even on a voluntary or semi-voluntary basis. I'd do!
Actually... we can start right now!
