Subject: Thoughts on The Hub

Watching this last night, I was wicked gleeful through out it and spoke to ABM on the phone straight after, where I continued to be wicked gleeful and 'Xena Thee! Hee! They made a buddy movie with Roslin and Baltar! Awesome! Baltar trying to convert the Centurion! LOl!'

But, once the initial glee passed, I've found a lot to nitpick. So, in no particular order.

Lucy Lawless was awesome, but she was also basically Xena. James Callis was also awesome, but he was also basically season one Baltar. Of my nitpicks, these are the ones I'm most inclined to handwave, cause I enjoyed them so much. It does though, IMO, indicate the general weakness of the writing below the surface this ep though.

Baltar's wound. Okay, I don't demand total accuracy on how medical stuff is presented on tv, but come on, a piece of lint loosely strapped on stops you bleeding out? They couldn't even have had Laura applying pressure to the wound? That's all it would have needed to raise it above, well, stupid.

There's cylon pilots in the raiders? Since when? That just seemed a random insertion to have fauxAthena speechify.

FauxAthena. What was the point? Well, I get the point an eight looking to be an individual decides to mimic Athena casue she hasn't quite got the hang of this individuality thing yet. In itself it's not a bad idea, but they seemed to just, do nothing with it. Helo barely even blinked. In fact, I got the distinct impression he kinda does think he's married to the entire production line. This could actually be potentially fascinating, but I also got the impression they have no intention of doing anything with this, it was just a way to buddy up Helo and an eight for an ep.

Laura's deathbed vision. In particular, Kara weeping on Lee's shoulder. Really Jane? I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that when Laura pops her clogs, Kara will be there. But, IMO, she'd be there mainly for Adama and Lee. I can count on one hand the number of times Kara and Roslin have interacted. Beyond this, Kara is the one in tears? Kara who I can't recall every seeing cry, while Lee's on the verge of tears every second episode? If I didn't know better Id assume all the writer had to go on was Lee was male and Kara was female and therefore, Kara would be the one in tears. Totally OOC.

The 'love' revelation was poorly worded IMO. It made it seems like Laura has to love someone, so it may as well be Adama while I presume what they were trying to convey was she should allow herself to admit to feelings she already has. Bill and Laura have acted like a married couple for two seasons at least. She talks about Lee to him as if she's his (admittedly, often exasperated) mother. I just found the choice of phrasing, strange.

To be fair to Espenson, I thought A/R was far more subtley handled (and was therefore enjoyable again) than last ep and there were some very funny lines. However, I think there were also some serious flaws in the script which are initially covered by the gloss of the humour and strong acting performances.

Jane wasn't my favorite Buffy writer, but I did love "Pangs", the Thanksgiving ep. I think it was her first Buffy ep, and she had the characters down pat for her first ep.

Spike: You made a bear!
Buffy: I didn't mean too
Spike: Undo it! Undo it!

I think she did a good job with this ep given what she had to acomplish. I think you know my fellings about Madame President, so this made it extremely hard for me to pay attention. I kept turning away and then something would happen and I missed it. Same thing happened the second time I watched. Laura and Adama puppy love just doesn't float my boat.

I always enjoy Baltar. Does that say something abby normal about me? I didn't want the cylon scene to end. Someone on TWOP mentioned that Baltar has taken on the dying leader prophesy. Angel/Spike and Laura/Baltar anyone?

This was the first time I've seen Xena on BSG. I always forget it's her.

The promos we see here in the states have been giving the next week's episode in a condensed version for weeks now. Not sure if the final cylon will be revealed, but it looks like Tigh will be outed.

I have some bad news. Not sure if you know or not, but next week will be a mid-season final. We won't see the second half of the final season until next year. Yeah, I know, it sucks. But on the other hand, Dr. Who has been fabulous. I love the actress they picked to play the doctor's daughter.

I wasn't really thrilled by the episode. It has its moments but I couldn't help feeling that it was too easy. The jump-induced visions that made Laura's journey, the destruction of the hub, the final reunion...Besides I am not a big fan of Laura/Bill, it looks cheap and cliché. I was moved to tears by Saul/Ellen but Laura/Bill doesn't work for me.

I found Bill's waiting for Laura, alone in space, less convincing than Leoben doing exactly the same thing for Kara, a few weeks ago.

However I loved the Baltar/Roslin scenes from the beginning to the end. They work wonderfully together. I enjoyed the fact that after the last vision in which Laura had her "love someone" epiphany, she genuinely wanted to save Baltar and called him "Gaius". I think that the Laura/Gaius dialectics is much more interesting than the Laura/Bill romance.

And Baltar sounded more than ever like the hybrid: "don't do this to me, don't do this".

But my favourite scene ever was the Baltar/Centurion one. Priceless! I just love the Centurions.

Helo barely even blinked. In fact, I got the distinct impression he kinda does think he's married to the entire production line. This could actually be potentially fascinating, but I also got the impression they have no intention of doing anything with this, it was just a way to buddy up Helo and an eight for an ep.

I don't know...they seemed to set something up, especially now that Athena is sort of insane and in the brig. And there's the fact that Boomer escaped. I would be extremely disappointed if we didn't get a final Helo/Boomer scene some day. It must happen.

I though that line about being married to the entire cylon line by Madame President was rather cruel. She really can be heartless. I wonder how she will react when she finds who's been playing president.

But it made sense concerning her journey. She hadn't had her epiphany yet and Helo embodied, so she thought, what she was fighting against. She called him a sentimental and probably saw him as...a fool for love.

Of course eventually she herself turned into a sentimental !

In a way Elosha was her First Slayer providing the "Love is your gift" message...and it worked, she gave, forgave and loved.

But suffice it to say I disagree with you on most things :)

There's cylon pilots in the raiders? Since when? That just seemed a random insertion to have fauxAthena speechify.

It's only ever been explicitly stated that the Cylon Raiders are biomechanical. The Heavy Raiders on the other hand, which is what were being used, are more like the Colonial Raptors, and it's never been said in the show that they fly themselves. Indeed, we saw in Valley Of Darkness that it was the Centurions occupying it (and, we assume, piloting it) - so it's not unbelievable that the Humlons would fly them too. Basically, my argument is that they were never definitively shown to be biomechanical, so there's leeway :)

FauxAthena. What was the point? Well, I get the point an eight looking to be an individual decides to mimic Athena casue she hasn't quite got the hang of this individuality thing yet. In itself it's not a bad idea, but they seemed to just, do nothing with it. Helo barely even blinked.

This probably comes down to your view of Tahmoh's acting and what was necessary - I personally thought Tahmoh did an excellent job of conveying his natural curiousity, his revulsion and his confusion all at the same time. And also, I don't think that's going to be the end of this. FauxThena will be back, and pissed.

I'm not commenting on the acting choices made by Lucy Lawless and James Callis, because a) I've never seen Xena, so I can't compare; and b) I'm not entirely sure how you can say that the Baltar you saw was Season 1 Baltar - maybe in the more light-hearted moments of the episode but he's a character that can go either way (comedy or drama) depending on the situation, and besides that with the emergence of the cult (and his "forgiveness") there is a little less of the angsty, guilt-ridden Baltar we had in seasons 2/3.

He doesn't overact unlike so many others...
