Subject: Task Three from Fernanda Dias

The procedure of continuous assessing in classroom

The continuous assessment technique in ESL teaching proposes an informal evaluation of learners’ language skills through their performance in classroom. For having such evaluation method applied in a certain group though, it is necessary to understand the steps of the method which should be taken for a successful evaluation.

The first step is that the teacher should have a separate notebook for students’ progress evaluation. That notebook (SPN – Students’ Progress Notebook) should be daily used in class since every learner’s relevant attitude (positive or negative) should be registered together with the impressions the evaluator had concerning them. It is advisable that the notebook should be divided in the same number of pages per student. The same notebook should also be used to register students’ frequency and as a class diary for writing down student’s garde on accomplishments and assignments.

As a second step, the teacher should prepare communicative activities for students to do them in and outside classroom (as homeworks). The grade for those activities should be based on students’ interactions with each other with the second language use as the background. For each level, the knowledge and fluency in certain aspects and functions of the language which is being taught will be demanded from learners, and thus, be the object of evaluation, according to students’ response on them.

A third and last step is that the teacher should analyse all the data (found in the SPN notebook together with the grades of the communicative activities) that was produced during the semester and have a communicative individual dialogue/interview with each learner. Such dialogue/interview is not supposed to inhibit students, but to make them fell free to express themselves in the second laguage and help the evaluator to conffirm or revise the final grade.

Therefore, the procedure for continuous assessing students in classroom is a more communicative way of evaluating which takes into consideration the progress of each student as an individual and as a part of a whole (classmates). By correctly following the steps in the paragraphs above, a teacher will be able to assess learners’ learning progress in a more detailed and personalized way.
