How to analyze a book

Analyzing a book is not an easy task. There are many people who do not know some essential points that contribute a lot to the comprehension of a book. At universities, analyzing a book is a very common activity, mainly to the students of Languages. Therefore, it is necessary to follow some steps to not get lost in this process and to not forget important elements that exist in a book.

Firstly, you have to consider the historical context to know the time when the book was written or the time when the story happens. This can help you to understand some useful events in the story and also, sometimes, why the author wrote about some fact which can be related to a specific context in which he or she can have lived. Doing this, it is possible to realize some aspects that you, probably, would not do if you did not analyze the historical context.

Following this, you should think about the characters and the setting. The characters are extremely needed in the development of a story because some of them can represent something very significant. The setting refers to the time and location in which a story takes place. The term is relevant for various forms of literary expression, such as short stories, novels, dramas, and screenplays. Setting can add an important dimension of meaning, reflecting character and embodying theme and, as a result, they illuminate the deeper meaning of a story.

After the characters and the setting, you should pay attention to the theme and to other literary elements, such as figurative language. A theme is a broad idea, a message or a lesson in a story conveyed by a work and it, in fact, is not presented directly at all. You extract it from the characters, action, and setting that make up the story. In other words, you must figure out the theme yourself. Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language. Most of the stories go beyond the literal meaning of words in order to furnish new effects or fresh insights into an idea or a subject.

To sum up, to analyze a book is necessary to follow a process that contains a lot of aspects and details. If you consider all of them, or, at least, most of them, you certainly will be able to understand very well all that is involved in the story and to get the deeply meaning of any literary element.
