I have to agree with Julie Johnstone in that for me this was a badly crafted play but not badly acted, directed or staged, I have sent more detailed comment to our Newsletter, but this is only my opinion and there will be those I know who loved it.
My main point is to question whether it should have been chosen as the opening play of the season, with hindsight I feel this was a bit risky as on the web the author is described as 'a struggling writer' with little if any published or performed works. I would also question why we were giving it a world wide premier there having been no interest from the professional theatre.(I only got this info after I had seen the play). I fully agree with supporting new writing and Alan Bates is certainly an enthusiast, but the vehicle for this play should have been our Studio, with the writer present and a constructive feedback session.
Finally I have to say that I cannot agree with the following remarks by Katrina Woods in her comments,'Amateur theatre is about providing an arena for amateur performers to indulge and have a good time, to provide affordable performances for local audiences to attend and supporting local charities'. Its just a bit condescending ,please note the aims and objectives of BLT in the Constitition and remember its the hobby of all of us.
