If I plan on competing aT large, do I have to contact my local recruiter? How would the at large registration process be like?

Most (not all, so don't get ugly) locals aren't worth your time or money. It's all about the director and whatever reason broght them to this point (meaning different directors have different reasons, that's all!). You also don't have to use their sponsors either. Just ask around then meet with some of them until you feel like you've clicked with that person.
