This photo was published on 14th July 1959, ten days before the final night. Another battle between a beauty and a bishop shaped up in Hawaii last week after judges picked curvaceous – and Catholic – Patricia Visser as the 50th state’s entrant in the Miss Universe 1959 contest. Patricia is the second Roman Catholic entrant in the Miss Universe contest to run into opposition from the church. The first one was Miss New Mexico, Sue Ingersoll of Alburquerque, who plans to enter the contest despite a ruling that she and her family would be deprived of the sacraments of the church for an indefinite period. Whether Patricia will face such discipline will lie with Most Rev. James J. Sweeney, Bishop of Honolulu.
