This photo was published on 25th July 1959, one day after the final night. Miss Japan, Akiko Kojima (left) was crowned as Miss Universe 1959 by Miss Universe 1958 from Miss Colombia, Luz Marina Zuluaga (right).
A classic Japanese beauty, whose sole ambition is “to make alovely wife,” Saturday wore the crown of Miss Universe – the first Asian winner in the pageant’s eight-year history.
Akiko is 22-year-old high-fashion Tokyo model who supports her widowed mother, won the title Friday night before 4,500 cheering spectators in the ocean-front Municipal Auditorium here.
Akiko lives in Tokyo with her 19-year-old brother, Takao, whom she hopes to send through college with her earnings from the contest.
Runnersup in order, were: 1st runner-up was Miss Norway, Jorunn Kristjansen, 18; 2nd runner-up was Miss U.S.A., Terry Lynn Huntingdon, 19; 3rd runner-up was Miss England, Pamela Anne Searle, 21; and 4th runner-up was Miss Brazil, Vera Ribeiro, 19.
Akiko “was forced to withdraw from last year’s Japanese contest for Miss Universe because of an auto accident. I was riding in the parade in Japan during the competition when our car was hit by another vehicle, and I suffered many bruises.”
Akiko will receive $11,000 worth of contracts for tours from a makeup firm and a bathing-suit company. In addition, she will receive a diamond ring, fur coat and other personal items.
Akiko’s mother lives in Kochi on the island of Shikoku. Her father, an Army major, died in 1950. She also has two sisters, one older and one younger.
Akiko said two movie studios, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros., “have expressed interested in me. I would be interested in only one or two movies – not a career. I would like to stay here awhle and then return home.”
