Miss Universe 1959. Photo 65.
This photo was published on 25th July 1959, one day after the final night. Miss Universe 1958 from Miss Colombia, Luz Marina Zuluaga (right), crowns Miss Japan, Akiko Kojima (left) as Miss Universe 1959.
Akiko is the first Miss Universe from Asia and her third attempt, and she would like to be in one or two movies in Hollywood and then return home.
Akiko is a high-fashion model from Tokyo, and she will use her prize of $11,000 to support her widowed mother and her brother’s studies.
This is the eighth Miss Universe and she won to 33 other contestants. Her measures are Sh has black hair and eyes, stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weighs 120 pounds and measures 93-57-90 and she weighs 120 pounds.
Runners-up in order were: 1st runner-up was Miss Norway, Jorunn Kristjansen; 2nd runner-up was Miss U.S.A., Terry Lynn Huntingdon; 3rd runner-up was Miss England, Pamela Anne Searle; and 4th runner-up was Miss Brazil, Vera Ribeiro.
Akiko has participated in Miss Japan three times. The first one was in 1953. The second one was in 1958 when she was forced to withdraw because of an auto accident. Akiko has won several contests in Japan.
Akiko lives in Tokyo with her brother of 19-year-old, Takao, and she supports his studies with her earnings as a high-fashion Tokyo model. Her mother lives in Kochi. Her father, an Army major, died in 1950.
