Chapter 23, I thought the gift of the bathtub was lovely, just unfortunately came at the wrong moment. I do, however, feel for Pamela. Many rape victims take months if not years before they are able to enjoy physical intimacy of any type with their partners.

Chapter 24, I thought Herr Blumfelds comments about the traitors' clock were very interesting and the idea that he could not go to Israel because he is unclean from handling so many dead bodies during the Holocaust. I think we all make choices in life that we are not necessarily proud of, but we make them in order to keep on living or to get from day-to-day. There are very few people who would willingly die for a principle; the urge to live in the most horrible of circumstances is very strong in the majority.

Chapter 25, I was relieved for all of them when the truth came out, finally. While I appreciate that Pamela was trying to protect Casey from himself, I did want her to tell him the truth when he confronted her about the abortion. I think keeping such horror inside and away from the person you love the most is very difficult. I don't think Pamela would have every fully healed until she told Casey the truth. While Casey may have to work to overcome the thoughts of what happened to Pamela, he didn't have to experience the violence and violation, so I think Pamela has the greater sacrifice in that sense. If he chooses not to seek vengeance, then Casey is certainly going against his nature out of love for Pamela, which is no small sacrifice, either. Casey sitting at the kitchen table crying helplessly at the thought of what had been done to the woman he loves chokes me up every time.
