Subject: Chapter Five: "Little Miss Lolita”

A beach on Martha's Vineyard. Looks like an ideal place to spend the summer.

A glimpse into Jamie’s past – a troubled relationship with his father, his friendship and marriage with Colleen, the loss of their sons and the disintegration of their marriage. Are there some things no relationship can survive? Or if the people are truly right for each other, do you think they can rebuild even in the face of such tragedy? There is a certain school of thought, which says you only get troubles you can handle, but clearly there are many people such as Colleen who cannot cope with the trials they are dealt. Or was her retreat from the world simply her way of coping and as valid as sticking around and toughing things out?

There are strong themes of fathers and sons, love, loyalty, anger and betrayal running through this chapter. Both Jamie and Casey wanting, in their own ways, to follow in their respective father’s footsteps while forging their own paths. Could either have become the men they are with different types of fathers?

Pamela reveals – to us at least – a long ago summer spent recuperating from an accident with Jamie for company. It seems he does not recollect that summer, or at least doesn’t connect it with the young woman sharing his home. Do you think he truly doesn’t remember her? Wouldn’t her name ring a bell? Or is he pretending not to know her for some reasons of his own?

Given Jamie’s self-admitted history of sleeping around, plus his desire for Pamela, why you think he refrains from taking her to his bed? How would it have changed things if he had sex with her that first night?

Both Casey and Pamela were abandoned by their mothers. Is this relevant to their relationship?
