Subject: 1. It does. I still don't necessarily agree with their methods but I can see how they'd be driven to them. What do you do when your family and friends have been deported, kicked off their land and out of their homes, denyed education and jobs, imprisoned unjustly, hauled off and murdered in the middle of the night for no reason other than their faith, colour, race etc. and all peaceful protests or calls for change are either ignored or met with violence? Doesn't leave you too many routes to go. Whether one is a terrorist, rebel, freedom fighter or soldier all depends on which side you're on. The Protestants had organizations just as brutal, just as indiscriminate in their actions and just as unlawful as the IRA, only the British turned a blind eye to them (and probably supported them in secret) because they were on their side.

1. Bloody Friday a retaliation for Bloody Sunday. Both devestating, one is looked upon as keeping order/peace, the other as terrorism. It never fails to anger me. Does reading about the situation in Northern Ireland, putting a human face to the IRA, who were considered terrorists, make you think differently about some of the modern day groups we put the terrorist title to?

2. There are many professions where you have to be objective, distance yourself from the human aspect, from your emotions, in order to perform your job. Photographing crime scenes and war has got be one of the hardest. Could you do it? Could you be a Doctor a Lawyer or a Crime Scene Investigator?

3. We’ve already discussed there are good people on both sides of this conflict. It seems Gerard is not a hardcore loyalist but just trying to do his job with the RUC. Pamela is in Belfast for love – why do you think Gerard is there?

  • 2. I think there is a big difference between seeing someone you love blown to bits, maimed, etc. than seeing a stranger. For doctors, nurses, cops, paramedics etc. their training takes over and they focus on the task at hand, rather than on the fact that it's a person beneath their hands. It's a limb to be reattached, or a gaping wound to be closed, not a child, mother, father etc. with a horrible injury. It's the only way to do what they do and not go mad. And many people in these types of professions do suffer from burn-out, addiction, mental illness (PTSD and depression) and higher rates of divorce. Could I do it? I honestly don't know. My mom assures me that with the training and skills just about anybody can rise to the occassion. (NT) -- Carla, 13:26:42 10/19/07 Fri
