72.1) I don't see the outburst from Casey as much out of character as Pamela's telling him not to bother coming back. I don't defend Casey's hostility in this chapter but there is high tension all around them following Bloody Friday, someone had just referred to his wife as the enemy's whore, and he'd just been in a heated fight over it. Add to it the knowledge that the IRA was keeping tabs on her, and I think it would be a rare husband who wouldn't be pissed at his wife right about now. Pamela, though, responded in haste to Casey because she is harboring the secret that Casey alludes to. The truth is getting much too close to the surface now. -- Cindy's Cottage

Pamela's statement here caught me off guard too Elaine. I'm thinking that, sometimes, if you can't or won't admit to your own faults, it's easier to turn it back on the other person. - It's such a natural thing to happen in the midst of an argument. It's probably happened to most of us at one time or another. It just seemed like such a hasty, knee-jerk response from Pamela, who was, after all, being interrupted from a chore that she regarded as tranquil and calming. It led me to believe she's really as angry at herself as she is at Casey. And not just for the Boston thing with Love, but also with sneaking off to 'chase rabbits,' as Casey might perceive it.
