Pamela may not be able to have Jamie in an intimate sense, without destroying her marriage, but she doesn't like anyone else having him either! These emotions are totally reasonable considering their history and how they feel about one another, just not very fair because she has made a choice and should not be in the way of Jamie keeping his options open. (49-2) Pamela would know exactly what Jamie needed under these circumstances without Jamie telling her. She understands the risks he's taking and would do anything to safeguard his well-being. They have a closeness which has not been taken to a physical level, but know each other's needs, wants, ideals.
