and language skills are in no way related to their immigration status. There are many that have lived here all thier life and don't speak English, and some just arrived who speak better English than me.

I am tone deaf when it comes to learning other languages. I have tried and failed many times, from classes to self-training. I have a great amount of admiration for those who are bi-lingual. I think my brain just ain't wired that way.

As for the young lady, youth may me a factor. Age and experience are the best teachers. Who know what she was exposed to at home and school. It may be worth pointing out in private that her words may taken the wrong way by some and reflect badly on herself.
