Hi Paula!

In order to answer your question, I am going to make use of the following paragraph found on Pragmaics in DA text, page 27. "teaching second lanuage learners always and only to be polite" is not recommended because " there are occasions and circumstances in which users of the target language will behave rudely or offendively in the interactions with nonative speakers." Based on that, I would teach my students use expressions like I'M SORRY, I DIDN'T MEAN....
SORRY, I MEANT.... I APPOLOGIZE, BY SAYING..... I MEANT... whenever they may feel treated rudely by a native speaker of the English language OR I would teach them expressions like I WONDER IF.... MAY I..... and other expressions like that.
Like you all girls, I liked our topic too. Pragmatic is the way to go.
