As you mentioned receptive vocabulary, I'd like to clarify that the notion of receptive vocabulary and productive vocabulary is very important.As the author says on page 76, we have much more receptive than productive vocabulary. When we listen or read something we are able to understand many words that we are unlikely to use in our own speech or writting.That's because we have receptive but not productive control of these words.
The author also says that some applied linguists believe that the major challenge in teaching vocabulary is to teach more receptive vocabulary so that L2 learners can become more efficient readers since it is estimated that a receptive vocabulary of fewer than 10,000 words will prevent a reader from comprehending all but the most rudimentary written English text.
Isn't it interesting?
