Stanley was surprised to see Max in the ICU unit. "What brings you up here?"

"Well," Max answered Stanely, but directed his gaze towards the doctor in charge, "I was hoping to get to see Gage yet tonight, perhaps have a few minutes with him."

Dr. Colson shook his head. "I don't see how that's possible, I'm sorry. I've already bent the rules by letting so many visitors in to see him tonight. He needs his rest."

"But it would only take a minute or so," Max insisted. "Time is always of the essence in cases like this, and if he has even the slightest bit of information, it could prove critical to our case." Max hoped against hope to persuade Colson.

"I'm sorry, but it's just not possible. Perhaps in the morning, depending on what kind of night he has. That boy has been through enough for one day, I'm afraid. As physician in charge, I just cannot allow it." Colson was leaving no room for further discussion.

Max nodded his head. He recognized a brick wall when he saw it. Glancing at his watch, he noticed the late hour. The group standing in front of him reminded of his own little family waiting patiently for his arrival. With the type of day he'd had, that was a comforting thought. Perhaps a fresh start in the morning would produce the results he sought to badly.

Heading back to her brother's room, Josie was surprised to see the nurse waiting for her outside his door.

"What's wrong, what's happened?" Josie asked. Not wanting to go into the room.

"I'm sorry Josie, he's gotten worse and I don't think he'll make it through the night", the nurse said as she looked at the young girl.

Looking at the door of her brother's room, Josie felt nothing. Saying nothing to the nurse, Josie opened the door and walked in. Leaning against the door, she listened to the heart monitor blip to the sound of her brother's heart rate.

Standing near him, she noticed that he was now having trouble breathing. She took her little brother's hand. Slowly caressing his tiny fingers, Josie started humming, and the night grew long.

Di, with a little editing by Steph ;) :
Josie stood stoically by the side of Tommy's bed. She never even flinched when the heart monitor lost its blip, sounding a steady, even tone in its stead.

The nurse made her way into the room quietly and reached over and turned off the machine, silencing its agonizing reminder that one more soul had found its way home. She rested her hand lightly on the young woman's shoulder and left quietly a minute later, leaving brother and sister to spend their last few moments together alone.

She thought she would cry when the time came, but no tears came forth. She would have cried, once upon a time, but that time had long since passed.

There was nothing now. No tears. No grief. No emotion. No family.

'Josie' had left, as had her family before her.

What little had remained of Josie's soul had died with her brother, leaving an empty shell where she had once resided, leaving someone who knew what had to be done.

Placing the tiny hand across the still chest, Josie reached up and stroked the dark, curly locks of hair for the last time. Leaning first to plant one final kiss on his forehead, she stood back from the bed. Taking a deep breath, she turned to retrieve her bag from her chair, and left through the door she had entered so many times over the past year for one final time, never to look back....

Josie was on a mission...nothing would standing in her way.
