Finally her patience paid off. The last visitor was leaving. She watched as the nurse did her last check. She watched as all the visitors had either left, or gone off to different parts of the hospital in search of coffee or snacks. When she felt confidant that noone else was making another grand appearance, she took one final glance up and down the hallway before approaching the nurses station.

Cara had just sat down to rest her feet when the pretty dark-haired girl appeared in front of her.

"Hi, I'm inquiring about John Gage. Is he able to see visitors yet?" Josie asked the tired looking nurse, as she smiled her sweetest smile.

"Well, yes, he has had some visitors, but..." Cara started hesitantly but stopped herself in mid-stream. "Say, I remember you. You were here once before, weren't you?" Cara returned the girl's warm smile.

Josie resisted the urge to flinch at the nurses remark, managing to retain her composure.

"Yes, but since I wasn't family, I was told I couldn't get in yet", Josie reminded her.

Cara had lived to regret that decision on her part. If she had just let this girl in to see John on that first day, maybe he wouldn't have had to go on so long with no other visitors. Not willing to repeat her earlier mistake, she allowed Josie entrance to Johnny's room.

"Sorry, but you can only have a minute with him, visiting hours 'are' over, and he's had a very long day," Cara said as she led the girl to Johnny's door.

"Oh don't worry, I won't be long at all," Josie replied as she pushed on the door. Stepping just inside, she closed the door behind her quietly. For now, all she needed was one peek at one of the men she felt was responsible for the death of her family the year before, and now, little Tommy.

"Do I know you?" a weak voice came from the bed, startling Josie.

Johnny had opened his eyes and noticed a young woman standing in his room. At first he thought she was another nurse, then noticed that she was not in uniform.

Josie froze momentarily. Not sure if she could speak to this man, she remained silent.

"Hello?" Johnny asked again, with a little more effort to make himself heard.

"Hi," Josie finally replied, as she made her way over to the bed. "I was just...I just wanted to see how you were."

"Do I know you?" Johnny repeated. Her voice seemed so familiar, yet he couldn't place it, though he knew he'd heard it before.

"Not really, but I was there, at the...accident. I saw it happen, and you get hurt. I just wanted to see how you were." Josie wasn't sure what to say to this man and just hoped her explanation would placate him.

"Oh..." Johnny was tiring quickly. It had been a long day, but he was touched by this stranger's compassion, though she seemed troubled...no, that wasn't the word for it. His mind was foggy. He didn't know what word described this girl, but something seemed wrong. "That's really nice. I'm going to fine though...now." He had been bolstered by his friends' visits, though now he just wanted to rest. He was so tired, yet he was curious about this last visitor.

"What's your name?" he asked as an afterthought.

Josie hesitated, though at this point she knew it didn't really matter anymore. She walked closer to where he lay. "Josie, My name is Josie"

"Well, Josie, thanks for coming to see me, but I'm really starting to get tired, if you don't mind", Johnny said as he tried to keep his eyes open long enough to say good bye.

Forcing them open one more time, he asked his visitor, "Will you come back?"

"Oh yes, I'll be back...one way or another, you'll know I was back," Josie answered, watching John fight to stay awake, then turned to make a hasty retreat. Johnny closed his eyes again, wondering exactly what she meant by that last statement.
