1 (CONT) With the later era, including "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", The Beatles began to create a completely new sound with weird sounding chord progression, words that don't make sense, and completely broke away from the standard AB format.
2. The lyrics of the early Beatles era were mostly about girls and having fun. They were straight forward and easy to understand. During the middle of their catelogue, the songs took on a deeper element, including questions on life and metaphors, like in "Eleanor Rigby" with "Look at all the lonely people". During the last era, Beatles' lyrics were bizarre and out-there, spurring on many suspicions that the songs were about drugs. Very few songs said their meaning flat out. The rest were all about metaphors, imagery, and being unique.
3. "Eleanor Rigby" is a rock song simply because it was done by The Beatles, especially because of their vocals. This song is not classical- the "Ahh" in each chorus is unrefined and rocky. It is not country or punk, and it is not jazz or blues. Though there is no guitar, drums, or typical "rock" sound, The Beatles offer in Eleanor Rigby a soulful, reflective, against-the-grain sound, making it forever a rock hit.
4. My favorite era of The Beatles is in the middle with "Hard Days Night" and the other deeper songs. The later era with all of the druggie songs are not my favorite because they, to me, seem somewhat forced and a sort of "look how weird we can be". I know that The Beatles were revolutionary and responsible for much of the music we hear today, but the drug-induced "genius" does not appeal to me.
