As we have read and seen, not everybody believed that swing was a good thing. Read some of the comments from critics below. Then take time to reflect and answer the questions that follow.

Archbishop Beckman of New York in a 1938 article in the New York Times:
"We permit, if not endorse, by our criminal indifference, 'jam sessions,' 'jitterbugs,' and cannibalistic rhythm orgies to occupy a place in our social scheme of things, wooing our youth along the primrose path to hell!"

Band leader Blue Barron denounced swing as “nothing but orchestrated sex . . . a phallic symbol set to sound.”

Dr. A. A. Brill, a Manhattan psychiatrist, went before newsreel cameras to declare that “Swing music represents our regression to the primitive tom-tom-tom, a rhythmic sound that pleases savages and children. . . . It acts as a narcotic and makes them forget reality. They forget the Depression, the loss of their jobs. . . . It is like taking a drug.”

These are just a sampling of the negative reaction to swing.

Please answer the following, using both concrete details and commentary to explain why.

1. What factors do you think motivated these individuals to single out and attack swing music in such an alarming way?
2. Are these attacks racially motivated? Give proof.
3. Is is possible that music can do the things that they claim swing does?
4. Are there types of music that are immoral?
5. Can you think of other examples of harsh reactions to a music form since you've been around?

When you are done, read through your classmates answers to numbers 1-3 and respond to one you agree with and one you disagree with. Your responses should address specific points in the person's answer and should include examples to support or counter.
