My older girl has rarely needed to be spanked. The mention of it or even the look that proceeds the threat straightens her up normally and always did. My youngest is a different story. Even a 'get your attention' smack on her bottom only seems to push more buttons. I'm not saying that she is a generally naughty girl. She is very responsible and respectful, but she is very, very headstrong and is not afraid to voice her opinion (something we encourage), but there are times, I think rather frequently that she needs a very sore little bottom, the type of spanking that will literally make her bottom tender for a couple of days. Sometimes I feel like a draconian monster, but grounding and taking things away turn her into a brooding, angry little tyrant. Spanking, and a very lengthy one at that is what works with her.
