The effects that Vietnam has on the United States involvement in the war with Iraq, is none. The United States obviously doesn’t want to learn from her past, so she continues to trudge through the deserts and cities of Iraq looking for “weapons of mass destructions” that are not appearing, while thousands of United States soldiers die fighting for a cause that is becoming bleaker by the moment.
One of the reasons why the United States entered the war was due to false statements and information. The United States said that North Vietnamese boats had attacked a United States ship right off the Tonkin Gulf without a motive. Also, the United States feared that if North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam it would lead to the taking over of Southeast Asia, making it a very communist threat and part of the world. Similarly to the war in Iraq, President Bush decided that Saddam’s rule was a very serious threat and the countries like North Korea, Iran, and Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction that needed to be destroyed because they could be used on the United States at any time. The weapons of mass destruction became a major factor in the invasion of Iraq, but during the many years that the United States has been in there, not one weapon of mass destruction was found.
Also, in both wars the strategy to win the war became and is becoming less evident. The outcome of the war in Vietnam became more apparent as the days went on, due to the mass of troops that were dying in the war and very little was being accomplished. In the war with Iraq very little is being accomplished as well. The United States may have dethroned Saddam, but there are no other events that are showing that the United States is accomplishing the task that she set out to do. A wise decision that United States can learn from the Vietnam War is this: pulling out. “Supporters of the war expected no honest answer when they asked “How can we get out?” Eventually Senator Aiken of Vermont gave them one: “In boats.”
The United States isn’t learning from the past mistakes that she has made. The best solution for the war in Iraq is: removing the troops. We went into the war for one reason, and then more reasons were added. The United States is obviously struggling in the war, but fails or refuses to see that this is their only option left. The United States needs to stop being the police nation of the world and mind her own business and let the world sort out their own problems.
