This link to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has a description of the VCUG (Voiding Cystourethrogram) procedure.

My sense is that it would be avoided in large scale testing of kids, and ultrasound or other procedures would likely be used in its place, because parents and other would be more likely to object to the child being exposed to radiation.
