The fact that the dentist quit and moved away is somewhat suspicious.

As stated previously, I would not have a problem with this if done carefully and professionally. They should have rehearsed potential problems such as the kid waking up early, and had their cover story straight in advance, and it should not have been a problem to keep photos out of sight.

If photos were used for puberty assessment by a medical doctor, this would probably expedite things considerably. Otherwise the boy would have had to see his pediatrician for evaluation which would have created a delay of days or perhaps even weeks. Then the pediatrician would have had to forward the report to the dentist. An MD could probably look at photos, draw conclusions in a few minutes, and then send a response very quickly without having to examine the patient in person.

SPECULATION: Assuming they exist, I wonder if such arrangements as this are informal, and "under the table." They may technically violate ethics or standard protocol, or even be technically illegal, but offer advantages of speed and cost, and expedite creating a treatment plan, or other advantages that make them irresistible to some dentists. And all payment for the MD's services could be though disguised channels, or through cash or barter. This could be why they are not discussed much.
