Call to Action -- John Doe, 09:45:11 02/26/09 Thu [2]
Call to Action
We the People are not presently well represented by our elected officials. Our basic needs are often times left to what we can muster between ourselves. Government at all levels fails us daily. Redresses for these outright crimes against civility are met with courts and bureaucracy that are impenetrable to appeal or petition. From state and federal down to our county and city levels, government suffers shortcomings. Our government has become the hindrance upon our pursuit of happiness, basic freedom, and even equality under the law. People, this is not what government was intended to be. Government is merely People realizing that problems can best be handled by people working together, rather than against one another. You are not alone. We the People left the State of Nature, in order to form a more Perfect Union. We levied claims that We would work together to see to it that certain Rights were inalienable. Moreover, We claimed that when government failed, that it was Our Duty to fix it. The problem is that We have become complacent, and unaware of our governments’ actions. We don’t see, or hear reported their everyday doings, dealings, decisions, or deliberations. More often than not, these meetings take place in executive session, behind closed doors, and well beyond the eyes and ears of the public. Local governments fair no better holding meetings, courts, and councils in rooms not large enough to accommodate a score of public attendees. And those charged with reporting on these events, that Free Press, being necessary to secure a Free State is woefully inadequate. They are as bought and paid for by these officials, as can be expected. We don’t see, or know about the shortcomings of our elected officials. More sad, is the fact that we just don’t care. Only about two-thirds of us are even registered, who are qualified, only half of which actually show up to vote on election day. If there is no federal election, local and state elections fair far worse. The point being that, most of us are staying out of and or are completely unaware of the process, and this is why government is so unresponsive to our daily needs. There are no checks and thus no balances. We have to know more about those we elect. We have to know how they vote each and every day, on each and every issue. We have to be the watchdogs upon our own government, lest they stray from their true purpose, to serve the Will and Needs of the People.
This is a Call to Action. Reach out, lend an ear to the movements and daily actions of those whom you have and are to vote for, see for your own eyes if they represent your values and ideas, or those listed in the Constitution of the United States. Show up at these public hearings, meetings, or counsels and witness the utter and complete incompetence, I have. You have to see, to know and understand the depth of the problem I am calling attention to. I have met a water board President, who couldn’t tell me and or didn’t know the Environmental Protection Agency’s safety level for lead contamination in drinking water. I have encountered a library board President who had never heard of the Library Bill of Rights, or the American Library Association. I have seen judges and courts ignore their own sanctioned Policies to limit the rights of citizens, merely because they had to cover for one of the officials they appointed. Almost every time I have attended a board or counsel meeting, I have seen or heard arguments for or in favor of limiting public access to government services, the very things my tax dollars fund. These elected officials forgot, or never initially understood, that it is their first duty to protect the individual’s right to public services, and to indeed help us gain access to these resources. It has become far too often that I have seen the opposite. I call on you now, to see and bare witness to the same. Then I call on you to VOTE for those who would act in line with standards you care about. Bare true witness to these things, and hold elected or appointed officials accountable for their shortcomings. Governments’ failure to act, is merely our failure to oversee their actions as voters. Politicians are re-elected most of the time, so either We don’t know or We don’t care. Regardless, We have only ourselves to blame. That said every passing moment is an opportunity to turn it all around. Help me, help us, to elect a government responsive to the needs of it’s citizenry. Let’s re-make government what it was intended to be, a State not of competitors, but teammates, intended to help and look out for one another. We are a Community, and when We act together there is nothing We can’t achieve. It is only when We act as individuals, that We separate ourselves from the communal goods and services that We’ve already paid for through taxes. We are that more perfect Union, or We are merely individuals acting as competitors stuck in the State of Nature, where the one with the strongest arm and biggest stick, makes all the rules. We Left that State, in order to form this more Perfect Union. American Democracy may very well be the best of what Government has to offer, that’s like being valedictorian of summer school. Our inaction, inattention, and general unawares and ignorance has given us our government induced problems.
Our best is just not good enough. Yet, all that is needed is that those who vote, do so in an informed manner. With that, I ask you to now, to Vote Smart, or not at all. Know not just the names of those whom you would vote for, but be able to boast of the actual votes they’ve made in line with your own beliefs. Stop voting for incumbents who haven’t done their job, and don’t represent you or your stances.
Yours Truly,
-Silence Do-Good

If I didn't know better, I would assume the author of these posts is AJ Knabe.
Get over the fact that you were removed from your position at the library and that the citizens of Muenster refused to elect you to the council.

Chapter 4: The Public Library- NO 'Bill of Rights' here. -- John Doe, 08:09:23 05/28/08 Wed [1]
The Muenster Public Library IS taxpayer funded, at least in part. So, one might presume that patrons would experience an institution, where individual rights like the Right to Free Access of Information and the Right to Privacy exist but,...you'd be wrong...
In our Library, everything you do on a computer can easily be seen from onlookers. AND onlookers are encouraged to do so, and report on your activity, if they disagree with it...
They also have a Meeting Room, where your 'non-profit group' can meet on a monthly basis. Unless, the Board or Director decides that your group doesn't qualify...I.E. Boy Scouts- QUALIFIED, Chess Club- NOT qualified.
Displays and discussions on library grounds, were or are to be a-political, and can not be seen to have or demonstrate any biased.
Internet filters now exist, regardless of the age of the user.
Sadly, our Public Library more colsely resembles it's "Christian" neighbor.

Chapter 3: Our Next Drinking Supply- Situated atop an old shooting range. -- John Doe, 08:43:30 05/26/08 Mon [1]
Not unlike most unelected boards, committees, or counsels, our Water Board is headed by someone who was promoted to the point of in-competency. Placed to oversee the safety and cleanliness of our water supply, the Board President couldn't tell me and or did not know when asked, "How much lead does it take to make water unsafe to drink?"
He is a new comer to this area, so it was not surprising to me, when he showed an ignorance of the history that belonged to our new lake's bottom, 'The Old Church Timbers'.
You see the Church Timbers were once a hunting haven, filled with small game and the hunters that follow them. Its proximity to the town meant that it was just a short hike away, and indeed hundreds of hunters had literally been pouring lead into that ground for many of Muenster’s early years, not to mention weekly church picnics, where 'Turkey Shoots', and or targeting contests were held on a regular basis.
This would have been found out, IF the builders had performed an Environmental Impact Study... However, NO such study was ever done, and so the history of this land was sweep under the rug, per say.
Had such a study been done, more excavation would have been done, to insure that any top surface contaminates would not make it into our future water supple.
Any and all nay saying about the Lake Project was ignored and or properly dispatched, and the construction continued unaware of the potential hazards that await us.
The Lake is now finished and is even open for fishing. It will be some years before we begin drawing water for our consumption, just enough time for the water to penetrate the Lake's bottom, and dilute the lead present there.
I, for one, won't be the least bit surprised when we lose our Superior Water Source- Rating, after we tie into the Lake.
The really sad thing is that most Muenster citizens, AND their appointed Water Board President & Members, WILL BE.

Chapter 2: Our Mayor- the slumlord -- John Doe, 08:46:23 05/25/08 Sun [1]
'I' can NOT buy a parcel of land within city limits, and place a "trailer-house", to 'live in' and or 'rent out', unless it is in the properly designated and or zoned area(s).
But that doesn't keep Our Mayor, from overseeing an estate in which he 'helps to manage', several such 'sets' of these 'very old' mobile home units. To top it off they are placed within eyeshot of our 3 most heavily traveled streets- 82, 4th, and Pecan. Grandfathering in old estates that allow one or two families, to operate outside of the accepted standards, seems to me to be a little intellectually dishonest. If it is a "mobile home", it goes in area A. If it is a ‘house’ home you can build or place it in area B. Allowing one group to break with this code, is still resulting in the wrong units in the wrong places. Grandfathering-in, or using 'historical significance' as a reason to break with adopted code(s) might work, IF it were or did indeed have some "historical significance".
But we are talking above a dozen trailers in the wrong spot…
What is the point of having the law, when there are clear violators within eyeshot of our busiest streets?
Our counsel enacted these codes for a reason, shouldn't we all be held to the same standards?
Is it really asking an "undo burden" to ask someone to move a "mobile home" to its properly designated zone, within a town less than 3 miles wide?

Chapter 1: The Streets- Our Raceway Sydrome -- John Doe, 08:36:36 05/22/08 Thu [1]
Muenster 'seems' to have a rather respectable system of wide, paved, well maintained streets. However, a closer look reveals cracks and potholes in streets no more than 3-5 years old, and dips and gutters that cause countless thousands of dollars in front end damage to unsuspecting drivers, as well as dangerous driving conditions.
Because of inexpensive repaving techniques, wherein outside construction crews are hired to merely overlay old surfaces with new pavement, this causes the roads to become higher and the dips & gutters get lower.
This process has a 3 pronged negative affect:
-A road's surface is ONLY as good as its underlying components. So, regardless of how much asphalt you put on a sub-standard sub-surface, you aren't going to get a long lasting, crack free, durable final product. We pay for roads to be resurfaced, and then in a matter of a few short years, that same road shows extreme signs of wear, to include potholes, long cracks, and even noticeable buckling where heavy traffic flows.
-As the roads get higher and the dips get lower, traffic flow itself is affected. At a four-way intersection with no stop signs or traffic lights, the drivers 'should' yield to the right. However, because of the ever increasing street heights, this has caused traffic, regardless of its position to other traffic, to slow and yield to streets without such obstacles. Thus the creation of Muenster's raceway street system, wherein proper traffic laws are ignored by most local drivers. While 'we' have learned to deal with this issue, visiting drivers are literally put into peril as they 'yield to the right', not expecting the fast free flowing Muenster traffic.
-These extremely deep dips and gutters cause damage to most cars, minivans, and other low-profile vehicles, regardless of the speed at which the dip is crossed. The most extreme of these dips must be crossed at an angle, or cars and the like will suffer the familiar "...s-c-r-a-p-e..." of the front end. The damage to visiting driver's vehicles is even worse, given their lack of knowledge about reducing your speed and increasing your angle of attack upon these outright hazards.
ALL of these problems could be remedied, if we chose to invest in proper resurfacing techniques. Having read several books on this topic, I have concluded that instead of overlaying new material on an old problem, and making them even worse. We should instead remove the built up height, lay down a heavy tar paper, and then lay down a new resurfacing material.
Removing the old height will rid us of our dangerous raceways, and the tar paper underlay provides a floating distributive subsurface, allowing better weight distribution and a much longer lifespan of 30+ years, even with heavy vehicle use.
While this technique IS more costly than the present procedure, the savings in far fewer repaving projects alone would be worth the investment. Not to mention the elimination of the raceways, a danger to both car and driver alike.
