Diane did not perform well during the top 5 Q&A portion, but is it possible that she scored highly in the other 3 categories (national costume, swimsuit, evening gown) that she was able to win solely on number of points?? Maybe her mistakes did not cost her the crown because she performed well in the other sections. I agree that she should not have caused attention to herself during the national costume segment, but I do not think this gave her an unfair advantage in the national costume judging segment. From what I heard, the costumes were judged the day before on Friday during the personal interviews. Also keep in mind that the judges met all of the contestants the day before the pageant for personal interviews, so maybe Diane performed very well during this section as well.
As far as comments of "buying" the crown, I think we all know that it costs a lot of money to be in a pageant. Diane had an extravagant dress that seems like it cost a lot of money. An evening gown that costs that much will surely stand out over a gown that is plain and simple. Maybe it's fair and maybe it's unfair, but that is the nature of pageants. If you look at other national and international pageants, it is also the case that more money put into a contestant's wardrobe, makeup, and hair can have advantageous effects for the contestant.
I do not know Diane personally so I cannot comment on her attitude backstage or in rehearsals. Judges only see what is on stage. Unfortunately they do not see what happens backstage. Contestants have a very narrow window in which to showcase themselves. Diane took FULL advantage of that.
As far as the comments on Virgelia, she is a business woman, and this pageant is her business. Like any good business person, her strategy is to make profit. I agree with SJ, it takes a lot of money to pay for the theater, programs, ads, lights, sound, video, and everything else that makes the contestants look professional and glamorous on stage. Let's just hope she is also independent, objective, and refrains from favoritism.
