At his question Midori broke down in tears, and he looked away hopelessly and wished the three men would come back and beat him up properly. He'd gone and said something again. His people skills ought to have been a medical condition.... the Maxisajerk Virus, or MIAJV. What sort of question was "are you alright"? Obviously she was not alright. Way to go, genius. Max thought, rubbing the back of his neck uncomfortably, feeling embarassed. He really wasn't good with people crying. He was beginning to want to go back to his apartment, something he'd never thought would be possible, but on the other hand he sort of felt responsible for Midori now, she seemed to be in a state, and he didn't entirely have the heart to leave her there.

But what was he supposed to do? Supposed to say? "wups, sorry lol"? Slowly Max kneeled down next to her and very lightly put his arm around her shoulder. "Sorry..." he said quietly, but broke off again before he could say anything else that would unintentionally only worsen the situation. For a few minutes he was silent, racking his brain trying to think what a normal person might say in such a situation. "It's ok, they've gone. You're safe." Max said quietly, and inwardly cringed at how nauseatingly corny he just sounded. Maybe "it's over" would've sounded better. Oi, anybody know where the rewind button is? For a moment he was glad he didn't know anybody here- if his mates back home had heard him he'd never hear the end of it.
